ATLANTIC SALMON FISHING

Excerpts from a letter from André to a client - July 2008

No later than a week ago, Matthew, you were part of a small group who enjoyed " SALMON FISHING AT IT"S BEST , AND THE REVIVAL OF THE LITTLE SOUTH WEST MIRAMICHI WITH NUMBERS AND QUALITY FISHING AS IT USED TO BE ". Unfortunately you had to leave, at the beginning of the RUN. I wanted you to stay, not knowing how long this exceptional fishing would last, but I knew that your paternal duties would bring you back to New Hampshire to be with Family and your Son. When miraculous fishing, like we are experiencing right now, happens, I would love to share it with all my good friends, but easier said than done. We all know how tough Atlantic Salmon Fishing can be if we don't have the right conditions at the right time.

Also joining us during this period of a large SUMMER RUN, was our new acquaintance to this very special sport, Adam the " Fly Fishing Kid" Chiasson, whom you had a chance to meet and help. I am sure he will prize the flies you gave him for his fly fishing box. What a beginning he had and at 15 years old, he struck "gold" in front of the lodge at Dennis's Pool. In his first 2 hours, he landed a 12 lb'er that he released and kept his first grilse ever for his mother, who made it possible for himself and his father who accompanied him, to live out this dream that he had since he started reading about Fly Fishing.

Adam went on to release a 15 lb'er and another larger fish of 38" that would make it to be a nice hen Salmon of 20 lb! He limited out every other day in camp, and released all others, Grilse and adult Salmon alike. This of course, would never have been possible without the help of our HEAD GUIDE, Marty Stewart. Marty's experience and ability to read waters, his precious advice to Adam, and his gentlemanly behavior on the river have made this young man a salmon fisherman, with the right attitude to carry on for the future. Bravo Marty and thank you, also to you Matt, for being part of this and sharing the guides, the water, and your advice with this young man.

....... and of course, Josée, his Mother who made a lot of sacrifices to send her 'Father & Son' Team to the waters of the Miramichi for this memorable fishing trip. Adam will never forget it ........AND NEITHER WILL I! Just look at the Grin on Adam's face, It says it all .

As I write these lines, July 6th 2008, the river is lousy with fish. Marty just came back from fishing and there were at least 25 hook-up's yesterday morning in this one pool alone - and the same story this morning. The bonus is that we do see quite a few adult salmon among this run. Also, some of the grilse would make it to 6 or 6 1/2 Lbs at 24 inches. This run started with the Full Moon on June 16-17-18 and has gotten better and better ever since. We have experienced this amazing revival NON STOP for the last 3 weeks. I know that it will stop at some point, but I'll bet you that this won't be until the high tides and the full moon of July have passed. VERY EXCEPTIONAL, INDEED !

I NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD LIVE TO SEE THIS AGAIN!! I HAVE TO RUN, THERE ARE SOME OF THESE FISH WAITING FOR ME ON THIS BEAUTIFUL CLEAN RIVER OF OURS ..

P.S. COME ON DOWN - WE DON'T MIND SHARING!!
'TOU-RE-LOU',
ANDRÉ

River Report 2006

Excerpts from the Atlantic Salmon Journal Sue Scott winter issue 2007:

“Constantly high water has allowed fish easier passage to go upstream. In August, anglers on the Miramichi system encountered a lot of large salmon, from ten to thirty pounds. Fishing in general was very good and the pools were full of fish. Fishing was above average on the Little Southwest Miramichi. Both salmon and grilse were plentiful, but anglers and guides saw more Salmon than grilse.

The good news is that for the past few years there has been a huge increase in large Salmon. There were lots of fish left in the system come fall fishing, many of them very large, one of them weighing 42 lbs, and fishing was great.”

MORE REPEAT SPAWNERS ON THE MIRAMICHI

River Report 2005

Excerpts from Spring 2006 Atlantic Salmon Journal

“We are seeing the re-establishment of a robust Atlantic salmon population structure on the Miramichi River. This river has gone from a virtual absence of repeat spawners to the point that it is now common to find fish coming back for a second and third spawning, and there are even a few individuals each year that are turning to the river for their seventh run! We have reason to believe that these older, more experienced fish are more successful in the business of reproduction, so the conservation measures that have rebuilt the repeat spawning componenet of the river will make this population more robust against future stresses. It will also position this river for a spectacular run resurgence when the factors in the ocean that are presently depressing salmon returns in general, let up. The repeat spawners are also larger, and I have yet to hear an angler complain about that.”
